The Refugee Development Center was created to be the highest quality, most innovative center of life skills development for refugees in the nation. At the Center, refugees are given a menu of traditional and self-based classes, tutoring programs, cultural and community orientations and resources. Refugee Development Assistants are essentially educators that help refugees access and use the center’s hi-tech learning resources, including satellite television, high speed internet, interactive learning programs, a driving simulator, learning videos and other resources. 50-60% of the clients speak Spanish. The refugee development center has volunteer opportunities in the education program.
The Hospice of Lansing and The Ionia Area Hospice provide professional care for individuals with a terminal illness and their families. The Hospice has volunteer opportunities in the health services program.
The Lansing School District is a diverse, mid-size, urban school district, (14,000+ students), located in the city adjacent to Michigan State University/East Lansing. Junior Achievement’s purpose is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics. This is accomplished through classroom volunteers. Volunteers serving as role models and mentors teach Junior Achievement’s sequential kindergarten through twelth-grade programs. Volunteers facilitate hands-on activities to help students better understand economic and business concepts, recognize their talents and abilities and prepare them for lifelong learning and achievement. JA volunteers educate, inspire and encourage young people to become tomorrow’s community leaders. Programs are delivered at no cost to students or schools. Junior Achievement has volunteer opportunities in business and community administration, community projects, and education programs.
The East Lansing Health Care Center provides 24-hour care to residents ranging in age from 36 to 103, with varying interests and abilities. Many services are provided to the residents by a caring and supportive staff. Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of activities that we offer to our residents. The East Lansing Health Care Center has volunteer opportunities in communication, community projects, health services, mental health and human services, and senior citizens programs.
Burcham Hills Retirement Community seeks to provide the best possible care for elders in the East Lansing community. Burcham is a continuum of care home for over 350 residents. We have cluster or independent condominium living, independent living apartments, assisted living, long-term care, sub-acute rehab, and dementia care. Burcham Hills Retirement Community has volunteer opportunities in health services and senior citizens programs.
Clean Water Action, a national citizens’ organizations with over 700,000 members nationwide, works for clean and safe water at an affordable cost, control of toxic chemicals, pollution prevention, recycling, and funding and enforcement for environmental protection. Headquartered in Washington, Clean Water Action has field offices in 14 key states, including Michigan. Clean Water Action has volunteer opportunities in communication, community projects, and science and the environment programs.
The Boys and Girls Club of Lansing provides the opportunity for youth ages 7-17 in year round programs to assist in developing a positive self-concept and sense of responsibility. Volunteers participate with youth in mentoring, tutoring and recreation programs in two facilities. The Main Center serves youth ages 7-17, the Extension Center serves youth ages 7-12. There are opportunities to volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing in the business, communication, education, recreation leadership, and youth mentoring programs.
The MSU Student Alumni Foundation sponsors the CAMPUS TOURS program which facilitates 600 tours per academic year, escorting 16,000 visitors to campus. The Student Alumni Foundation has volunteer positions available in business, communication, and community projects programs.
The Girls Scouts of Michigan Capital Council provides girls with the opportunity to discover fun friendships and the power of girls together through field trips, skill building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges and environmental stewardships. Girls learn leadership skills, values, social conscience and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. The Girls Scouts have positions available in the business, communication, recreation leadership, and youth mentoring programs.
