Begun in January 1968 as the Office of Volunteers, becoming the Service-Learning Center in 1979, and the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement (CSLCE) in 2002, the CSLCE is the oldest, continuously operating service-learning center in the country! From its inception, the CSLCE, a university-wide initiative, has worked closely with MSU colleges, academic departments, student affairs and services units, pre-college programs and others to offer mutually beneficial, quality service, service-learning and civic engagement opportunities linking faculty, staff and students with community.

Highlights of the 40th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, April 1, 2008 from 2:30-4:30 p.m., include:

“Forty Years in the Academy: Service-Learning’s Pioneers, Programs and Promise” Engaged Scholar presentation by internationally recognized service-learning scholar, Dwight E. Giles, Jr. Dwight Giles will discuss service-learning’s evolution from an obscure pedagogical practice into an institutional priority, and reflect on its journey from the margins to the mainstream and toward maturity both nationally and at Michigan State University.

Recognition of MSU’s own “pioneers” in service-learning

The 1st Annual MSU Curricular Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Awards.

The event is free and open to the public, however, seating is limited. To register for this event and/or more information on Dwight Giles’ talk, go to 40th Anniversary Celebration!

Junior Achievement’s purpose is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics. This is accomplished through classroom volunteers. Volunteers serving as role models and mentors teach Junior Achievement’s sequential kindergarten through twelth-grade programs. Volunteers facilitate hands-on activities to help students better understand economic and business concepts, recognize their talents and abilities and prepare them for lifelong learning and achievement. JA volunteers educate, inspire and encourage young people to become tomorrow’s community leaders. Programs are delivered at no cost to students or schools. Junior Achievement has volunteer opportunities in business and community administration, community projects, and education programs.
