Types of Opportunities?

There are many types of service-learning opportunities available with non-profit organizations, schools, hospitals, health care facilities, government agencies, and advocacy groups. Below is a list of current programs and a sample of the types of opportunities available.

Spring Break volunteer trips working with a variety of social issues throughout the U.S. and abroad
Community Administration Accounting/Finance, Assistant, Human Resource Assistant, Fundraising, Grant Writing
Communication Public relations, newsletter publication, marketing/advertising, telecommunications
Community Nutrition Clinical nutrition, dietary assistant, food service, nutrition education, food shelters
Community Events Short-term projects such as clothing drive, assist a nonprofit with a fundraising event, assist with a special event that lasts from an hour to several hours–such as a social gathering, party, soup kitchen, food bank, homeless shelters, school carnival
Education Tutoring in K-12 in various subjects, classroom aide, after school program aide, literacy programs for adults, GED prep, alternative education
Health Services Dental observer, clinic volunteer, health and fitness education, pharmacy aide, blood room donor, public health work
Mental Health & Human Services Client advocacy, caseworker assistant, patient care assistant, crisis intervention, shelter aide, children’s services, senior citizens
Ingham Regional Medical Center OB, Ortho/Tech, Pediatrics, Surgery, PT/Sports Medicine, Emergency Room
Into the Streets One day event: participants go to various non-profit community partners and volunteer in areas of Environmental, Children and Youth, literacy, Health, Hunger and Homelessness
Legislative Issues Constituent work, communications, and possibly research
Museums and Cultural Arts Administration, marketing, curatorial, exhibit design and production, education, public relations
Pre-School & Day Care Teacher assistant, administrative duties, special project work
Pre-Vet Medicine Observing veterinarian and other clinic staff, hands-on work is determined by veterinarian and volunteer
Recreation Leadership Recreation activity leaders, scouting, arts and crafts, sports officiating, boys and girls club, after school recreation leader
Science & Environment Environmental education, consumer information or education, technical demonstration projects, conservation, resource development and research
Senior Citizens Interact with seniors in various settings, lead leisure activities, arts and crafts, play an instrument, read books or magazines to residents, play board games
Sparrow Health System Food and nutrition, mother/baby center, outpatient surgery, ob special care, pediatric playroom, diabetes education, ER, Escorts, Peds After Hours, Substance Abuse Care, Hospice
Special Populations Horseback therapeutic riding program for persons with disabilities, tutor/mentor students in resource classrooms
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Provide assistance in preparation of federal, state, and local income taxes for low income, senior citizens, and MSU students
Youth Mentoring Assist youth in development of study skills, empathy and straight talk about important issues, positive activities related to leisure time, development of writing skills, team building, learning to respect others, and activities related to positive youth development
