Student-Led Initiatives

Some CSLCE programs are directly administered by registered student organizations: Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, Into the Streets, and Alternative Spring Break.

Alternative Spring Break
Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a registered student organization in partnership with the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement at Michigan State University. ASB provides a unique living and working experience for students looking for an alternative to the typical “Cancun style” spring break. Students confront a variety of social issues such as poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, physical and mental disabilities, education, and hunger in locations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Latin America.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax help for low- to moderate-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Volunteers receive training from the IRS to help prepare basic tax returns on campus (for international students) and in the Lansing community.

Into the Streets
Into the Streets is a student organization dedicated to introducing MSU students to thoughtful community service. Into the Streets plans major service events each year, including Make a Difference Day and Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service. Each event works with approximately 20 agencies in the Lansing area. Into the Streets also organizes smaller service projects working with a variety of social issues throughout the year.

Spartan Smart Statements
Spartan Smart Statements provides financial education relevant to students through a group of student peer educators. Beginning in October student organizations and residence halls will be able to request presentations on the following topics: budgeting, credit cards, and housing transitions. Other topics will be added in the future and all presentations can be tailored to meet your group’s needs.
