FOREWORD: 2022-2023
Community-Engaged
Learning Index

Dear Spartan Community,

We are pleased to share the 2022-2023 edition of the Michigan State University (MSU) Community-Engaged Learning Index, or “the index,” as it is fondly referred to in our daily work. This is the seventh edition of this report, covering 10 years of community-engaged learning at MSU. In collecting the data and stories of this work for a decade, we have come to recognize just how critical community-engaged learning is to the Spartan experience, both in the classroom and beyond.

For the 2022-2023 academic year, there were 23,909 student community-engaged learning registrations. Of those registrations, 25% (6,036) were in community-engaged learning as part of an academic course or program, and 75% (17,873) were in co-curricular community service and engagement.

Our work is framed by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Social Change Wheel. In this edition you will learn more about how MSU faculty, staff, students, and partners are working together toward anti-racism, equity, and co-creation in their community-engaged learning efforts.

Our mission is to prepare students for lifelong civic and social responsibility. These stories demonstrate how Spartans contribute to the culture of social good. We believe that to build an equitable society, we must contribute to social justice through partnership, community building, leadership development, critical reflection, and social innovation.

Our team is grateful for all the outstanding efforts of our community. In addition to the community-engaged learning that occurred during the 2022-2023 academic year, we witnessed overwhelming community support through the tragic events of February 13, 2023. Our community came together in ways that were unimaginable during a time that was inconceivable.

Working together, Michigan State University was once again ranked number 2 in Service-Learning among all public higher education institutions in the United States. This is an accolade to be shared by the entire Spartan community. It takes partners, students, and faculty/staff to build community.

We look forward to the 2023-2024 academic year and to continuing this important work with our campus and community partners!

Sincerely,

The CCEL Team
